The second season of the series 1923 is dedicated to the late cast member Cole Briggs Plenty. Known for his role as Pete Many Clouds, the 27-year-old actor passed away just three months before filming for the second season prequel of Yellowstone was set to resume. After the first episode of the second season opened with the dedication «in memory of», fans wanted to learn more about Plenty and his mysterious death.
In honor of Plenty’s memory, his friend and fellow actor Jeremy Gauna, whom showrunner Taylor Sheridan chose to replace Plenty, opened up to the Los Angeles Times about the difficult responsibility of playing the character and honoring Plenty’s memory. Furthermore, Gauna noted that he is obligated to accurately portray Native Americans on screen.
«Without telling these stories, history may repeat itself», - Gauna said, adding, «And we definitely don’t need to regress. We need to move forward. We need to grow. We need to be better in all respects, in all of humanity and in general. All I can say is that everyone has their own story. Until we have the opportunity to hear everyone’s story, it will be difficult for everyone to understand the lessons of others if they don’t take the time to learn them».

Prior to 1923, Plenty also appeared in the films «The Story of Jim Bridger» and «Into the Wild Frontier», - according to his IMDB page.
According to The Kansas City Star, Judge Johnson sealed court documents related to Plenty’s mysterious death. The sheriff’s office noted in an email that they will not disclose additional information about the case at the request of Plenty’s family.
When Plenty was found dead, authorities stated that they did not suspect foul play.
In March 2024, Plenty’s family reported him missing. Shortly before that, he was found dead next to an abandoned car.
Lawrence Kansas Police Chief Rich Lockhart called the case «tragic» at the time «for everyone involved». He also noted that the police department «worked very hard to investigate the incidents and diligently searched for Cole».
«None of us could have imagined such an outcome», - Lockhart insisted, according to an official statement. «I learned through this series of events that our police department needs to work harder to build trust with our Native American members. Meeting with Cole’s family and members of our Native American community, I clearly see that we are not where we should be in partnership with the community, which is very important to Lawrence’s history and current culture. This sad series of events was shared worldwide. I hope that the future bridges we build and the partnerships we form between our Native American community and our police department will create relationships that not only increase trust and understanding, but also serve as a model for other communities».
Gauna, who replaced Plenty in the role of Pete Many Clouds in 1923, spoke with the Los Angeles Times after the release of the second season. The actor from the series 1883 shared that he and Plenty were «close friends, and it all started through social media». Furthermore, Gauna was acquainted with Plenty’s family.
«We talked every day», - Gauna emphasized. «I heard about his struggles in life and the joy of what was to come with 1923. He was so excited about this role. He couldn’t believe he would be in every episode».
Although it was «difficult» to replace Plenty on set, Gauna noted that he did not take on the role «for praise», - adding, «I'm not doing this for anything other than for everyone to remember and honor him. I understand that this is my goal. Some people may not fully understand it, but I fully realize it, and Cole was with me throughout the entire process»
