Last year, CBS confirmed that their long-running detective series «Blue Bloods» is ending after 14 seasons. Now, with the final episode airing, fans are still asking themselves one question: why were «Blue Bloods» canceled after less than 15 seasons?

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly in December 2024, the star of the show Tom Selleck recalled the last day of filming. He noted that «no one» from the cast and crew «wanted it to end».

«It was just sudden, when someone said, 'Well, we need to wrap it up' - it was very quiet for a while. No one was making speeches», - Tom said about the last day of filming. «It felt like something needed to be said. Eventually, I read a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay — 'Love is not all' - and that sort of started a discussion that lasted a couple of hours. There were tears, hugs, group hugs, individual hugs. No one wanted it to end».

As with several other canceled TV shows (iCarly, Young Sheldon, among others), CBS did not provide a reason for canceling «Blue Bloods». However, many fans speculate that one of the reasons could have been the impact of WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. «Blue Bloods» still had high ratings, CBS executives stated in a statement.

«Blue Bloods will forever remain a beloved part of CBS’s legacy», - wrote network executives Amy Reisenbach and David Stapf in a joint statement. «It ruled Friday nights with unparalleled dominance since its launch and established itself as a cornerstone of our winning lineup with exceptionally devoted fans».

Tom also confirmed the show’s cancellation in a statement to Variety: «For the past 13 years, it has been an honor and privilege to work on a show that not only celebrates the men and women protecting and serving in New York but also showcases the importance of family. Working alongside these incredible actors, writers, producers, directors, and crew has been a dream, and I am grateful to have been part of this amazing group for over 275 episodes. Thank you to CBS Studios and CBS Network for their unwavering support, and we express sincere gratitude to the fans who gathered with us for dinner every Friday night».

Earlier, it was reported that the actors of «Blue Bloods» agreed to a 25% pay cut to keep the show on the air. Most of them agreed to a salary reduction to extend the series to a 14th season. At the time, Deadline reported that CBS insisted on «significant budget cuts».

Before the show was renewed for its final season, star Donnie Wahlberg spoke with PEOPLE about how he believed the audience would react if «Blue Bloods» did not get renewed for another season.

«I love 'Blue Bloods,' and I think if there wasn’t a 14th season, the loyal fans of the show would be very, very upset», - he noted. «They are part of the Reagan family. The audience is the extended family. … If the show disappeared without a proper goodbye, I think they would be devastated. So, I suppose we will have at least one more season».

The last episode of «Blue Bloods» aired on December 13, 2024.

The entire Reagan family received a satisfying conclusion for fans. None of the family members were killed, and they managed to restore peace in the city. Additionally, Sergeant Jamie Reagan and his wife Eddie Janko-Reagan announced that they would soon have a child.

By the end of the finale, New York Police Commissioner Frank Reagan delivered a touching speech.

«Our dinners are never about the food», - Frank said. «You know, we have a lot to be thankful for, and looking around this table, I have to say, I couldn’t be prouder or more grateful».

Cable TV users can watch the show on CBS, while others can stream the series on Paramount+
