Teachers across the United States are the eyes and ears of schools. Many elementary and middle school educators work to provide quality education for students, and to thank them for their hard work, there is a day — and a whole week — to congratulate them: National Teacher Day and National Teacher Appreciation Week.
Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped launch this holiday back in January 1953. Roosevelt lobbied Congress to create a day dedicated to teachers.
«Teachers, of course, are some of the most important people in our country», - Roosevelt said at the time. «Day after day, they work, preparing future citizens of the United States… I have always felt that we do not give teachers a proper place in our communities. After parents, they are the most important people in our communities».
Pointing out that «it is quite impossible to give teachers only monetary compensation that will reward their dedication to work», - Roosevelt added that the country «could more adequately reward teachers in our communities if it recognized their importance».
«It is in the classroom that many of our children receive the best lessons of democracy, and the men or women teaching our children must remember that the school experience is just preparation for a broader experience of life and citizenship in democracy», - added the late First Lady at the time.
National Teacher Day falls on May 6, 2025. Although it is not a federal holiday, there are many ways in which students and their communities can acknowledge hardworking teachers.

Although there is unfortunately no federal holiday to give teachers — and their students — a day off, everyone is encouraged to take the time during the week to thank them for their dedication.
Several fast-food chains and major franchises across the country offer discounts, promotions, and free offerings to customers in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week.
Throughout the week from May 5 to May 9, Whataburger is offering teachers a free breakfast item in the morning. Customers just need to present a valid school ID when ordering. According to information from various sources, McDonald’s is also offering a similar free treat to teachers throughout the week
