Cole Briggs Plenty, who played Pete Plenty Clouds in the popular spin-off «Yellowstone» titled «1923», was honored as «Pete» at the beginning of the credits of the first episode.
The actor passed away at the age of 27 in 2024, just three months before filming for the second season of the show was set to resume.
Briggs Plenty first went missing after an alleged incident of domestic violence, as reported by the New York Post on April 2 of the previous year. Later, he was found dead next to an abandoned car in a wooded area in Kansas on April 5, 2024. The Johnson County police later confirmed via Facebook that there were «no signs of foul play».
«This is a tragic case for everyone involved», - said Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart in a statement. «Your police department worked very diligently on investigating the incidents and worked very hard to locate Cole».
«None of us could have imagined this outcome», - Lockhart continued. «I learned through this series of events that our police department needs to work harder to establish trust with our indigenous community members».
The cause of death was not announced and remains unknown.
In the second season of «1923», Pete Plenty Clouds was played by Jeremy Gauna, a 36-year-old actor of Native American and Mexican descent. He represents the Choctaw nation from Oklahoma and stars in the Netflix series «American Primitive» as Toll Shadow.
Gauna told the Los Angeles Times after the release of the second season about the responsibility of accurately portraying indigenous people on screen.
«Without these stories, history can repeat itself», - Gauna said, adding: «And we definitely don’t need to regress. We need to move forward. We need to evolve. We need to be better in all respects, in all of humanity and in general. All I can say is that everyone has their own story. Until we have the opportunity to hear everyone’s story, it will be difficult for everyone to understand the lessons of others if they don’t take the time to learn them».
Gauna also shared that he and Briggs Plenty were «close friends», a connection that began through social media.
«We communicated daily», - Gauna pointed out. «I heard about his struggles in life and his excitement about what was to come with 1923. He was so thrilled about this role. He couldn’t believe he would be in every episode»
