On October 15, a shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulting in the deaths of at least three children and one adult. The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, was killed on the spot, reportedly by a bystander.
According to Bend police, the shooting began around 12:59 PM when the first call came in reporting that an unknown shooter was firing at a vehicle. Within the next minute, multiple calls were made to emergency services reporting gunfire inside the school. Police arrived at the scene just three minutes after the first call. Shortly thereafter, it was reported that the suspect was dead.
Two individuals were transported to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment, but their current condition is unknown. Police confirmed that there are children among the victims. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that federal agents are assisting local authorities with the investigation.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed condolences to the families of the victims and noted that his team is shaken by this tragedy. He added that the priority is to care for students and staff, as well as to assist law enforcement and emergency services.
This is not the first instance of mass shooting in Bend: in 2022, 20-year-old Ethan Blair Miller killed two people and injured two others at a Safeway store before taking his own life.
