Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored on Thursday at a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
The casket of the 39th president departed from the U.S. Capitol this morning at 9 o’clock, marking the solemn day of remembrance and reverence.
On January 9th, Carter’s remains will arrive at the Washington National Cathedral at 10 am Eastern Time.
The ceremony will include speeches from several touching speakers, including Steve Ford, who will read notes written by his late father, former President Gerald Ford; Ted Mondale, who will read words written by his late father, former Vice President Walter Mondale; former Carter advisor Stu Eizenstat; Jason Carter, one of the grandchildren of the former president; and President Joe Biden.
At 11:15 am, Carter’s remains, accompanied by his family, will depart from the cathedral towards Joint Base Andrews. There they will board Special Air Mission 39, the same plane that serves as Air Force One when the sitting president is on board.
At 2:00 pm, Special Air Mission 39 will arrive at Lawson Army Airfield in Fort Benning, Georgia. Carter’s remains will be ceremonially transferred to a hearse, and the family will travel to Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, in a motorcade.
According to USA Today, President Biden signed an executive order on December 30th, effectively closing all government agencies on Thursday, January 9th. This means that in a sign of respect, executive departments and all federal agencies will be closed on this day. Flags will be flown at half-staff at the White House and public buildings. The New York Stock Exchange will also be closed, as well as the Supreme Court building. The U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail on this day.
«I urge Americans to gather in their places of worship on this day to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. I invite people around the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance», - Biden said in his proclamation, declaring January 9th a National Day of Mourning, according to Newsweek.
Former President Carter will receive state funerals, with ceremonies in both Georgia and Washington, D.C. According to U.S. News & World Report, he will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda from January 7th to 9th. The last National Day of Mourning was declared after the death of former President George H.W. Bush, who passed away in December 2018 at the age of 94.
At the age of 100, Carter was the oldest living former president. He was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia, where he spent his last days almost a century later. At the time of his death, he was receiving palliative care at his home
