On Tuesday, June 10, a mysterious fire broke out at Grand Central Terminal in New York, leading to extensive disruptions in the operation of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) trains. Commuters traveling into the city for work in the morning faced train delays and cancellations as firefighters tried to localize the problem.

Around 8:00 am on June 10, firefighters responded to a second alarm due to smoke coming from the tunnel at the station. Three firefighters and one civilian were injured as a result, according to the FDNY. Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker stated in a release: «Over 100 firefighters, under the command of Deputy Assistant Chief Dave Simms, worked in extremely hazardous conditions with thick smoke and zero visibility to locate and extinguish an electrical fire behind a roll-up gate. It took several hours and a significant water operation to extinguish the fire».
The FDNY also reported that there was virtually no visibility in the tunnel. MTA closed the Grand Central Madison concourse while firefighters worked to determine the cause of the fire.
Hours later, it was revealed that the fire was caused by an electrical panel, so service was suspended to allow firefighters access to the panel, as reported by Eyewitness News.
MTA announced that train service would be fully restored for the evening commute. Subway service was not affected by the incident.
We expect normal service during peak hours after the earlier FDNY activity.
LIRR announced that just before 3:00 pm Eastern Time, train service was restored for the remainder of the day. In a tweet, they stated: «Service to/from Grand Central will resume with the 2:41 pm train from Grand Central to Hempstead and the 2:34 pm train from Jamaica to Grand Central. We expect normal service during peak hours after the earlier FDNY activity»
