Evacuations were announced for residents living in an area known as «MAL-C112», - which covers the region east of Malibu Canyon Road and south of Piuma Road. According to the Los Angeles Times, evacuations were announced from Tuna Canyon to Carbon Beach, from Carbon Beach to Puerco Canyon, and from Puerco Canyon to Trancas Canyon.

Early on December 10, Pepperdine University updated the status of its campus several times. The school canceled classes for the day.

«Normal activities on the Malibu campus are suspended for Tuesday», - the university tweeted. «This includes canceling classes and exams for the day. Critical support staff should contact their immediate supervisors to determine if they need to report to the Malibu campus for their regular work shift. All other employees should contact their supervisors and work remotely if possible».

The university added: «The Pepperdine community continues to shelter in place at Payson Library and Tyler Campus Center. The Franklin fire has grown to 814 acres, and flames are visible from the Malibu campus. There are numerous Los Angeles County fire engines on campus, and their helicopters are using the graduate park lakes to collect water to drop on the fire from the air».

Several hours later, Pepperdine informed students that they had lifted the shelter status.

«After assessing conditions on campus at dawn, the university is lifting the shelter protocol», - the school announced in a separate tweet on December 10. «Conditions on campus are safe for community members to return to student housing and campus homes. The community is strongly encouraged to remain on campus and not travel on Malibu roads, as first responders continue to respond to the Franklin fire, which continues to threaten Malibu».

Pepperdine added in its tweet: «Additionally, firefighting efforts on campus continue, and residents are urged to limit driving on campus to allow first responders to respond to fire hotspots that continue to emerge around the campus. Power remains off for much of the campus and the Malibu area. The red flag warning continues as gusty winds persist. If conditions worsen, we will need to reintroduce the shelter protocol».

Malibu closed roads for six miles along the Pacific coast. Road closures were announced east of Corral Canyon Road and west of Las Flores Canyon Road. Additionally, Las Virgenes Road was closed south of Mulholland Highway, extending to the Pacific coast.
