Students at Pepperdine University woke up to a distressing notification about a fire near Franklin. The private university in the Los Angeles County, California, is located above the Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu, which were severely affected by a brush fire on December 9 and 10, 2024. At the time of publication, 2,200 acres of land had been burned.
In the early morning hours of December 10, Pepperdine campus tweeted that the university was in «shelter in place» mode.
«All members of the Malibu campus community should shelter in place at the Tyler Campus Center or Payson Library», - the university wrote. «Despite any evacuation orders from the city of Malibu or surrounding areas, members of the university community should follow the university’s instructions. We are not evacuating the campus, even if surrounding areas may — this shelter in place protocol is approved by the Los Angeles County Fire Department and is being carried out in cooperation with them».
All updates from Pepperdine University regarding the Malibu fire can be seen below.
On December 10, the Pepperdine X account announced that all classes and regular activities were «suspended» for the entire day on Tuesday.
«Regular activities on the Malibu campus are suspended for Tuesday», - read one of the university’s tweets. «This includes the cancellation of classes and exams for the day. Critical support staff should contact their immediate supervisors to determine if they need to report to the Malibu campus for their regular work shift. All other employees should contact their immediate supervisors and work remotely if possible».
The announcement also noted that the fire in Franklin «has increased to 814 acres, and the flames are visible from the Malibu campus».
«There are numerous fire trucks from the Los Angeles County Fire Department on campus, and their helicopters are using the lakes in Alumni Park to collect water to drop from above on the fire», - Pepperdine added.
The entire Pepperdine University campus remains unharmed. The school acknowledged in one of its tweets that there are «small pockets of fire on campus, not threatening lives or buildings, and fire resources remain on campus to fight these pockets as they arise».
«Additionally, power remains off for most of Malibu, and therefore, to ensure the safety of our community, we will continue to maintain the shelter in place protocol at least until daylight. The Emergency Operations Center will continue to inform the community», - Pepperdine added in update X.
As the fire in Franklin continues to devastate much of Malibu, it is unclear when Pepperdine will resume classes. Reopening should occur when the Los Angeles Fire Department is able to contain most of the fire.
«After assessing conditions on campus at dawn, the university is canceling the shelter in place protocol», - Pepperdine wrote later on the morning of December 10. «Conditions on campus are safe for members of the community to return to student housing and campus homes».
The university urged its students to «stay on campus and not travel on Malibu roads, as first responders continue to respond to the Franklin fire, which continues to threaten Malibu».
«Efforts to extinguish the fire on campus are ongoing, and residents are urged to limit movement on campus to allow first responders to respond to the pockets of fire that continue to arise around the campus», - Pepperdine added in its tweet. «Power remains off for most of the campus and the Malibu area. The red flag warning continues as gusty winds persist. If conditions worsen, we may be forced to reintroduce our shelter in place protocol»
