The attempted assassination of Donald Trump by Thomas Matthew Crooks is haunting his family. On Monday, July 22, Crooks' father, Matthew Brian Crooks, was seen coming out of a local grocery store and was besieged by journalists and photographers.

«We just want to try to take care of ourselves right now. Please give us our personal space», - he said, according to several sources. «We will issue a statement when our legal counsel advises us to do so. Until then, we have no comments».

Earlier this month, 20-year-old Crooks attempted to kill Trump, 78, after climbing onto the roof of a neighboring building during a pre-election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. Shots rang out during the Republican candidate’s speech to supporters at the event, and several members of the crowd quickly ducked. Trump was clearly grazed by a bullet in the ear, and he covered it before blood was visible on the right side of his face. Secret Service agents immediately assisted Trump and escorted him off the stage to a car.

Crooks' motives remain unknown. He died at the scene, according to several sources. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the deceased shooter’s intentions. His political affiliations are also unclear. In early 2021, Crooks reportedly donated $ 15 to the left-wing Progressive Turnout Project, but later that same year he registered as a Republican.

Trump visited a weekly event of the Republican National Committee shortly after the incident, where he wore a bandage on his ear.

On Monday, July 22, Secret Service Director Kimberly Chitl was questioned by both Republicans and Democrats during a televised hearing on the security lapse at Trump’s previous rally. Chitl resigned the following day.

«In light of recent events, I have made the difficult decision to step down as director», - she wrote in an email, according to NBC News. In the message, Chitl took «full responsibility for the security lapse» at Trump’s rally and noted that «criticism over the past week has been intense and will continue as our operational tempo increases»
