Eight months after the death of Matthew Perry, police are still investigating the death of the «Friends» star, a new report states. Earlier this week, a source in law enforcement told PEOPLE journalists on Tuesday, June 25, that their investigation is «coming to a close» and that they believe «several individuals» may be charged.

Media also reported that the US Attorney’s Office will decide whether to press charges against unidentified individuals. The US Attorney’s Office declined to comment in response to this report.

Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. The cause of his death was ruled an accident, and the autopsy results indicated that the late comedian died from acute effects of ketamine after a course of ketamine therapy. After the toxicology report was presented in December 2023, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, ketamine caused cardiovascular reassessment in Perry, as well as respiratory depression. The investigation into Perry’s death was closed at that time. However, earlier this year, the Los Angeles police were looking into the circumstances of his death, PEOPLE reports.

According to the publication, a source close to the Los Angeles police told in May that they were working with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to determine where Perry obtained ketamine before his death.

In the years leading up to his untimely death, the star of «17 Again» openly spoke about his struggles with addiction. Perry released his memoir «Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing» in 2022. In the book, he revealed that in 2019, he ruptured his intestine after taking OxyContin and underwent a seven-hour surgery. As a result, Perry was in a coma for two weeks.

In one excerpt from Perry’s memoirs, he recalled the moment when doctors told his family that he had little chance of survival.

«I would have to live the rest of my days knowing that my mother and others heard those words», - Matthew wrote, referring to the doctors' words. «I realized that my biggest fear had come true, and I was to blame for it».

Perry also noted that he «was in a psychiatric hospital, went to therapy twice a week for thirty years» because of his drug addiction. However, after recovering, Perry decided to help others struggling with addiction by sharing his story.
