Did Politico receive funding from the government: truth or lie? Did Politico receive funding from the government: truth or lie?
Politico, apparently, received payments from the government, as the White House reported earlier this week. Donald Trump expressed a conspiracy theory on Truth Social regarding the situation, claiming that «billions of dollars were stolen in USAid» and other agencies as a «payoff» to certain media organizations to create «good stories about Democrats». However, in reality, Politico received a small amount of money in the form of subscriptions from the United States Agency for International Development (USAid), according to many sources. Shortly after the White House revealed news of the funding, reports emerged of an apparent delay in paying Politico employees in the first week of February 2025.

Politico is a digital news publication that covers current events in American politics. It was founded by media executive and banker Robert Allbritton in 2007. The digital newspaper famously broke the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.

After Trump was re-elected president, a memorandum from the Department of Defense ordered Politico to vacate its workspace in the Pentagon in Washington. Politico was not the only media outlet asked to leave its workspace in the building; NBC News and The New York Times were also asked to do the same as part of a new «rotation program».

Politico employees were paid their salaries late by their employer in the first week of February 2025, according to Fox News. The publication reported that employees typically receive bi-weekly direct deposit payments every Tuesday. However, the funds did not arrive in their accounts at the usual time. An anonymous employee told Fox News that management did not address the payment issue until 9 a.m. that day and called it a «technical error». The employee also claimed that final payments did not arrive until Wednesday morning.

In response to the salary payment delay, a Politico representative told Fox on Wednesday, February 5th: «Employees were paid yesterday, there was a technical error that was resolved within a few hours».

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt addressed the public, telling journalists: «I became aware of funding from USAid to media organizations, including Politico, which, as I understand, has a presence in this room. I can confirm that over 8 million taxpayer dollars that went towards subsidizing subscriptions to Politico at the expense of American taxpayers will no longer occur. The DOGE team [Department of Government Efficiency] is working on canceling these payments now».

According to USAspending.gov, Politico did not receive billions or millions of dollars solely from USAid. However, $ 44,000 came from USAid out of a total of $ 8 million that Politico received through contracts and subscriptions, as reported by many sources, including The Dispatch
