There are still three years left until the 2028 presidential elections, but already several names are being mentioned in discussions about possible candidates from the Democrats and Republicans. One of them is Jay Dee Vance, who currently holds the position of Vice President under Donald Trump. However, Trump has previously stated that he does not expect his Vice President to succeed him in 2028, but noted that it is still «too early» to make such predictions.

During an interview with Bret Baier of Fox News in February 2025, Baier asked Trump if he believed Vance would become the next president after his term.

«No», - Trump replied, adding: «But he is very capable. I mean, I don’t think it, you know, we have a lot of very capable people. Right now I think he’s doing a fantastic job. Too early. We’re just getting started».

After Baier pointed out that Vance will be «seeking support» when the midterm elections come around, Trump responded: «Yes, many have said it was the most magnificent start, almost three weeks, in the history of the presidency. We did so much, so quickly. And we really had to, because they really, what they did to our country, so sad. So sad. We will be bigger, better, and stronger than ever before».

Below are the names of potential candidates for the 2028 presidential elections.

President Trump: «No, but he is very capable. … You have a lot of very capable people. … Too early».

Jay Dee Vance: Vance is still considered a potential successor to Trump, as he has been a staunch supporter of the president and a leading figure in the Republican Party.

Marco Rubio: The Secretary of State is one of the top contenders due to his loyalty to Trump and his previous participation in the 2016 elections.

Ron DeSantis: The Governor of Florida has clashed with Trump on various issues, but his tough stance on immigration raids makes him one of the top contenders among Republicans.

Glenn Youngkin: The term of the Governor of Virginia is ending soon, so he will be open to new opportunities.

Gavin Newsom: The term of the Governor of California is coming to an end, and many are urging him to run for office.

Pete Buttigieg: The former Transportation Secretary has previously fought against Joe Biden and has been active in both red and blue states. He is also one of the few Democrats who has appeared in interviews on Fox News.

Andy Beshear: The Governor of Kentucky has stated his goal of flipping red states.

Ruben Gallego: The name of the Democrat has also been mentioned in discussions about who will run in 2028
