On Saturday, July 20, 2024, The Times newspaper published an enlightening profile of Megan Agnew about the most famous traditional wife on the internet, Hanna Nilman, known as Ballerina Farm.

The Nilman empire online has nearly 20 million followers on social platforms.

Agnew visited the Nilman family on their 328-acre farm in Utah, which serves as the backdrop for the Ballerina Farm brand. However, her discoveries painted a completely different picture than the blissful, dutiful image of a traditional wife that Nilman portrays online.

Beef stroganoff — the family’s favorite dish. I used some lamb we had in the freezer and added Daniel’s yogurt, which he prepared the night before ✨✨

The journalist found a woman burdened and worn down by her life.

Nilman, 34, does not openly express her difficulties. Throughout the profile, Agnew notes the difficulty in getting direct quotes from Nilman, emphasizing how often she is corrected or interrupted by her husband Daniel or one of their eight children.

Any honest conversation with the mother seemed possible only when her husband left the room. It was then that Agnew took her chance to ask Hanna why she decided to forgo pain relief during childbirth. «I don’t know, I just never liked taking them», - reflected Hanna. «Except for Martha — I was two weeks late and she weighed 10 pounds, and Daniel wasn’t with me …», - she lowered her voice, she noted. «So I had an epidural. And it was an amazing experience. It was pretty great».

When Agnew finally gathered the courage to ask about contraception, the couple insisted that Jesus is the best. «For me, it’s a question of prayer», - the young wife insisted. «I'm like, 'God, is it time to bring another one into the world?' And I’ve never been told no».

«But for some reason, exactly nine months [after the birth of a child] she’s ready for the next one», - added Daniel.

Nilman and the fairy tales we grew up with seem to further emphasize that they are outdated and based on rigid gender roles. Their strongly held Mormon beliefs may explain some of this, with an emphasis on heterosexual unions, sexual purity, and the absence of abortions except in cases of rape, sexual violence, or incest.

There is a very dismissive attitude that people have towards traditional wives. Society often views them as brainwashed victims of patriarchy, without considering that staying at home with children is just as legitimate a choice as returning to work after pregnancy.

However, one cannot read this article without wondering if the aspect of choice was present for the young ballerina
