Government crisis in France: what does it mean for the USA? Government crisis in France: what does it mean for the USA?
The collapse of the French government has been the main news this week, as chaos in the French parliament continues. Prime Minister François Bayrou, who took office in December 2024, was removed by deputies in a surprising vote, leaving the country’s government in limbo as French President Emmanuel Macron must find a replacement. So, what does this mean for France and the United States?

Learn more about the political crisis in France and what it means for Americans.

A government collapse occurs when the central institution of a nation falls apart, leaving the country without a government for an indefinite period. This usually happens during periods of economic and political crises.

The French government collapsed because Prime Minister Bayrou was removed. He had been in office for only about nine months. Bayrou was removed by the National Assembly with a total of 364 votes against him and 194 in his favor. The total number of votes needed for the prime minister’s resignation is 280.

Bayrou advocated for an unpopular austerity plan of 44 billion euros (51 billion US dollars) for 2026, which included canceling two public holidays in France. According to the Élysée Palace, Macron must choose a new prime minister to replace Bayrou.

Signs of Bayrou’s downfall were visible several months before the vote, as he tried to convince French lawmakers that cutting government spending was a reasonable plan to pay off the nation’s debts. Obviously, he miscalculated, and he must resign as prime minister of France tomorrow, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

There is currently no clear choice for Macron to replace the prime minister. His possible prospects are currently unknown.

At the moment, the collapse of the French government will not greatly impact the United States, but over time it could. Both countries have worked together on many issues and policies over the past few centuries. In the midst of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, France and America are experiencing additional strain on their governments
