Puerto Rico has played an important role in American politics. The US territory has been a key topic in the last few presidential elections. But can the residents of Puerto Rico vote for the president? Learn more about their voting rights in light of the 2024 elections below.
The 2024 presidential elections will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. Therefore, it is not an official state, and residents cannot vote in US presidential elections. However, Puerto Ricans can vote for the president if they are registered in any of the US states.
Additionally, residents of Puerto Rico can vote in primary elections and have the right to choose delegates representing them at the Democratic and Republican party conventions.
Many celebrities of Puerto Rican descent have expressed their support for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections. Many of them voiced their support after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made derogatory remarks about Latinos and African Americans at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 27. One of the remarks that strongly impacted voters was his reference to Puerto Rico as a «floating island of garbage».
Among the most well-known celebrities of Puerto Rican descent supporting Harris was Luis Fonsi, widely known for his hit «Despacito». The singer shared his opinion on Hinchcliffe’s remarks on his Instagram Stories.
«I understand humor, I’m a big fan of it», - Fonsi wrote. «I love roasts, believe me, I get it, but… this is far from humor. But no, not against my island, my people. Adiós! It’s okay to have different views, and I respect those who think differently… but going down this RACIST path — that’s not it. I’m proud to be Puerto Rican, to be Latino! We do not agree with this constant hatred. It was clear that these people do not respect us, yet they want our vote. Oh yes, I purposely wrote this in English, because yes, we are Americans too».
Jennifer Lopez also expressed her support for Harris, sharing Instagram Stories highlighting the vice president’s plans to create «an economy of opportunities» for Puerto Rico and the US. Ricky Martin followed suit, sharing similar videos and clips on his Instagram Stories
