Upcoming flights may be canceled due to the ongoing government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration announced a reduction in flights at 40 major airports in the United States on Wednesday, November 5, causing national concern and outrage as many are preparing to fly home for the holidays. Here is a full list of airports facing cutbacks.

At this time, your flight this week may be canceled or at least delayed due to the ongoing shutdown. During a press conference on November 5, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffey stated that the number of flights at 40 major airports will be reduced by 10 percent.

«This will lead to more cancellations, but we will work with airlines to do this systematically», - Duffey said.

Flights are being reduced nationwide because the cutbacks «will help where help is most needed», - according to Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Brian Bedford.

«We will not take any action that jeopardizes the safety of air travel in the United States», - Bedford added.

American Airlines issued a statement clarifying that the «vast majority» of its customers will not face significant issues.

«We expect that the vast majority of our customers' travel will not be affected, and long-haul international flights will remain on schedule», - the airline explained. «As schedule changes are made, we will actively reach out to customers who are affected».

The company also urged lawmakers to resolve the shutdown as soon as possible.

«Meanwhile, we continue to urge leaders in Washington, D.C., to reach an immediate resolution to end the shutdown», - the airline added. «We are grateful to air traffic controllers, TSA officers, CBP officers, and other federal employees who are currently working without pay to safely transport our customers where they need to go, as well as our American Airlines employees who always strive to better care for our customers».

United Airlines also issued a statement, promising to refund their customers during this period «even if their flight is not affected».

«This includes non-refundable tickets and customers with economy class tickets», - United added
