Aileen Wuornos, one of the most infamous serial killers in history, is once again drawing attention with a new documentary series from Investigation Discovery titled «Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos». This project promises exclusive access to key participants in the investigation.
Wuornos was sentenced to death on January 31, 1992, for the murder of Richard Mallory. The following year, she confessed to several other murders, resulting in a total of six death sentences. The last of these was handed down in February 1993. Wuornos was executed on October 9, 2002, at Florida State Prison, ten years after her first sentence.
Working as a sex worker on Florida highways, Wuornos confessed to killing seven of her clients between 1989 and 1990. Her first victim was 51-year-old electronics store owner Richard Mallory, whom she shot after claiming he raped and beat her. Mallory’s body was found in Volusia County, and his car was discovered abandoned two days after the murder.
Wuornos was arrested on January 9, 1991, at a biker bar in Florida after her fingerprints were found in one of the victim’s cars. The next day, police located her then-partner, Tyria Moore, and granted her immunity in exchange for Wuornos’s full confession. On January 16, 1991, Wuornos confessed to seven murders, claiming she acted in self-defense.
The premiere of «Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos» is set for September 30, 2026, on the ID channel and will also be available for streaming on HBO Max.
