The holiday began as a celebration of George Washington’s birthday, which falls on February 22. Washington’s Birthday was established by Congress as a holiday for all federal employees in 1885. Later, in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved the celebration to the third Monday of February, according to the National Archives.
