It has been two days since President Joe Biden announced that he will not run for re-election. Following this initial statement, he will address the nation for the first time on Wednesday, July 24th, at 8:00 pm Eastern Time.
The 81-year-old politician will soon complete his four-year term after taking office for the third time in 2021 alongside his Vice President Kamala Harris. Reflecting on his years in office, President Biden noted: «America has the strongest economy in the world. We have made historic investments in rebuilding our nation, reducing the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, and expanding affordable healthcare to a record number of Americans. We have provided critical assistance to millions of veterans exposed to toxic substances. We passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. We appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And we passed the most significant climate legislation in world history. America has never been better prepared for leadership than it is today».
In a separate statement, he wrote: «I have dedicated my presidency to proving this, and will continue to do so today, tomorrow, and every day that I am fortunate enough to be your president».
Recently, he was unable to perform his duties due to a COVID-19 infection. In a statement released by press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, his doctor stated: «The President presented with upper respiratory symptoms this afternoon, including nasal congestion and an unproductive cough, along with overall fatigue. He was feeling well before his first event of the day, but given that he did not improve, testing for COVID-19 was conducted, and the results came back positive for the COVID-19 virus. Given this, the President will isolate in accordance with CDC guidelines for symptomatic individuals».
On Sunday, July 21st, in addition to announcing his departure, he also endorsed his current Vice President Kamala Harris to run in the Democratic Party primaries, which delegates largely supported. The 59-year-old politician made history by entering the White House as the first female Vice President.
With the end of the Biden-Harris campaign and the start of Harris’s campaign without a confirmed running mate yet, the nation can expect the President to address the nation at 8:00 pm Eastern Time
