Hunter Biden (real name: Robert Hunter Biden) is once again making headlines due to his controversial accusations of violating gun and tax laws. For many years, his father, President Joe Biden, has repeatedly stated that he will not grant an official pardon to his son. But as Joe’s presidency is coming to an end soon, can he change his mind?

In a recent statement, President Biden said that Hunter was «handled differently» and that «the accusations in his case only arose after several of his political opponents in Congress provoked them to attack [Joe] and oppose [his] election» in 2020.

In addition to Hunter, President Biden is the father of daughter Ashley Biden. His other children — Beau and Naomi «Amy» Biden — have passed away. Beau died of brain cancer in 2015 at the age of 46, and Naomi died in a car accident with her mother, Joe’s first wife Neilia, in 1972. Naomi was only a year old.

Hunter was found guilty of several charges in two separate cases: one related to taxes, and the other to gun charges. In June 2024, Hunter was found guilty of three felony charges related to purchasing a revolver in 2018; the jury found him guilty of lying to the gun seller, falsely stating in a form that he did not use drugs, and illegally possessing the gun for 11 days, according to the Associated Press.

In September 2024, Hunter pleaded guilty to three felony tax crimes and six tax misdemeanors, according to information from the US Department of Justice. According to his federal tax indictment, Hunter participated in a four-year scheme to evade paying approximately $ 1.4 million in federal taxes that he owed from 2016 to 2019.

Hunter was awaiting sentencing on the tax and gun charges. Sentencing was scheduled for December 2024.

In an official statement, President Biden officially pardoned his son Hunter on December 1, 2024. According to the Associated Press, Joe insisted that from the first day of his presidency, he said he «would not interfere in the decisions of justice».

«And I kept my word, even as I watched my son being selectively and unfairly pursued», - the president emphasized. «Without aggravating circumstances, such as using in crime, multiple purchases, or buying guns on behalf of another person, people are almost never prosecuted for criminal charges solely because of how they filled out a gun purchase form. Those who paid taxes late due to serious dependencies, but subsequently returned them with interest and penalties, usually receive non-criminal resolutions. Obviously, Hunter was handled differently».

Joe continued to claim that Hunter’s accusations «arose only after several of his political opponents in Congress provoked them to attack [him] and oppose [his] election».

«No reasonable person, considering the facts of Hunter’s case, can come to any other conclusion than that Hunter was chosen only because he is my son — and that is wrong», - Joe continued. «Trying to break Hunter — who has been abstaining from alcohol for five and a half years, even in the face of relentless attacks and selective persecution. Trying to break Hunter, they tried to break me — and there is no reason to believe that this will stop here. Enough».

At the end of the statement, the president added that he adhered to the «simple principle: just tell the American people the truth».

«Here's the truth: I believe in justice, but in fighting for it, I also believe that rough politics has infected this process and led to a judicial error — and once I made this decision over the weekend, there was no point in further delaying it», - said President Biden, before concluding: «I hope that Americans understand why a father and president came to such a decision»
