President Joe Biden granted a pardon to his son, Hunter Biden, who was facing two criminal charges. This decision is an unprecedented turning point, as President Biden had previously and repeatedly promised not to use his executive powers to pardon his son or reduce his sentence.

«Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter», - said 82-year-old Biden on Sunday, December 1. «I believe in justice, but as I reflect on this, I also believe that rough politics played a role that infected this process and led to a miscarriage of justice», - added Biden. «I hope that Americans will understand why a father and president came to this decision».

Find out who else Biden pardoned as his presidency nears its end.

A federal pardon is a power granted to the President of the United States under Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution. This pardon power allows the president to pardon all federal offenders, except those related to impeachment.

Acts of pardon include amnesty, reprieves, sentence commutations, and pardons — the broadest form of relief. A full pardon releases a person from punishment and restores their civil rights, such as the right to vote, the right to run for office, and the right to serve on a jury.

Including his son, Biden has pardoned 25 people and commuted 132 sentences during his presidency, according to the Department of Justice.

Biden has pardoned many individuals, including entire groups. In 2022, he issued an executive order pardoning over 6,500 individuals convicted of simple marijuana possession under federal and District of Columbia laws, a measure he expanded in 2023. Earlier this year, he also issued a general pardon for LGBTQ+ service members discharged from the military due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

As for Hunter, the 54-year-old was facing the threat of years in federal prison on multiple charges of illegal possession of weapons and tax fraud, but he received a full and unconditional pardon.

During his four years in the White House, from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021, Trump issued a total of 237 acts of pardon, including 143 pardons and 94 sentence commutations.
