President Joe Biden said that he called former President Donald Trump after his ear was grazed by a bullet during a pre-election rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13. According to The Wall Street Journal, the call was «brief and respectful». In addition to the call, Biden released several statements calling for peace and condemning the assassination attempt on the former president.

After the shooting, Biden took to social media to inform Americans that he had received information about the shooting. He also expressed best wishes to the former president and condemned the shooting. «I am grateful that he is safe and feeling well. We pray for him and his family, as well as for everyone who was at the rally, while we await further information», - he said. «Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for ensuring his safety. There is no place for such violence in America. We must come together as one nation to condemn this».

Biden shared a message of unity following the attack during a televised address on Sunday evening. «There is no place for such violence in America — for any violence. Never. Period. No exceptions. We cannot allow this violence to become the norm», - he said, reiterating his statement online. «Here in America, we need to step out of our echo chambers, where we only listen to those we agree with, where misinformation is rampant, where foreign actors stoke the flames of our division to shape outcomes that suit their interests, not ours».

The President also spoke out against the toxic language people use when discussing politics. «Political rhetoric in this country has become very heated. It’s time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility for this», - he said.

The shooter was identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed by Secret Service agents. One rally attendee was killed, and two others were injured. Former First Lady Melania Trump also released a statement about the shooting
