President Joe Biden recently made a remark that sparked debates among voters. In response to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s statement about Puerto Rico at a Donald Trump rally at Madison Square Garden, 81-year-old Biden replied using the word «garbage», - which confused the audience. So who did Biden call «garbage»?
During a call organized by Voto Latino on Tuesday, October 29, Biden responded to Hinchcliffe’s comment about Puerto Rico, which he called a «floating island of garbage».
«Just the other day, the speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage», - Biden said, according to the Associated Press. «Let me tell you something, I don’t know a Puerto Rican, whom I know, Puerto Ricans whom I know in my home state of Delaware. They are good, decent, honorable people».
Biden then added, «The only garbage I see floating there are his supporters. His demonization of Latin Americans is unacceptable and unworthy of Americans. It goes completely against everything we have done, everything we have been».
Based on his comment, Biden apparently called Trump supporters «garbage». However, the president clarified what he meant in a subsequent statement.
«Earlier today, I called the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico expressed by a Trump supporter at his rally at Madison Square Garden garbage — it’s the only word I can think of to describe it», - Biden wrote on Twitter. «His demonization of Latin Americans is unacceptable. That’s all I wanted to say. The comments at that rally do not reflect who we are as a nation».
During a conversation with journalists at Joint Base Andrews, Vice President and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris noted: «First and foremost, [Biden] clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I categorically disagree with criticizing people based on who they vote for».
Harris also emphasized one of the messages of her campaign, which is that she will be a president for all Americans, regardless of their party affiliation.
«I have been very clear with the American public, I respect the challenges that people face», - she said. «I am serious about what I mean when I am elected president, I will represent all Americans, including those who do not vote for me, and meet their needs and desires»
