Donald Trump insists that his health is fine, but his doctor announced in July 2025 that he has a condition that affects his veins. The president, who had been experiencing leg swelling, received his diagnosis that month, and the White House released a report. Now that this information is public, we have an analysis of what chronic venous insufficiency is and what it means for Trump below.

Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, according to a memorandum issued by his doctor, Dr. Sean Baraballa, in July 2025.

The president underwent diagnostic vascular studies and ultrasound after experiencing leg swelling. White House press secretary Caroline Levitt told journalists on July 17, 2025 that bruises were visible on the back of Trump’s hand, which she attributed to his «frequent handshakes» with people, as well as his use of aspirin.

«This corresponds to minor irritation of soft tissues from frequent handshakes and the intake of aspirin, which is taken as part of standard cardiovascular disease prevention», - Levitt insisted.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a health condition that occurs when a person’s leg veins have difficulty passing blood, which can result from damage to the valves in the veins, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. If left untreated, the patient may experience pain, swelling, skin changes, varicose veins, and other health problems.

This health condition affects approximately one in 20 adults.

Dr. Baraballa wrote in the memorandum: «President Trump remains in excellent health». Thus, it appears that chronic venous insufficiency is the only apparent health condition that he is living with.

In another memorandum, Baraballa noted that «it is important that there were no signs of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease» in the Republican and that Trump’s laboratory tests were all «within normal limits».

«No signs of heart failure, kidney damage, or systemic disease were detected» after Trump underwent an echocardiogram.

Vice President Jay Dee Vance, however, told USA Today in August 2025 about Trump’s well-being. The vice president insisted that Trump is in «incredibly good health», - but he is ready to assume the presidency «if, God forbid, a terrible tragedy occurs».

«He has incredible energy, and although most people working around the President of the United States are younger than him, I think we find that he is actually the last one to go to bed, the last one to make phone calls at night, and the first one to wake up and the first one to make phone calls in the morning», - Vance said about Trump. «Yes, terrible tragedies happen, but I am very confident that the President of the United States is in good shape, will serve out the remainder of his term, and will do great things for the American people».

In that month, false rumors about the president’s death spread on social media, and they were quickly debunked.

Trump is now 79 years old. He will turn 80 on June 14, 2026
