As one of his first actions as President of the United States, Donald Trump declassified documents related to the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Signing several orders in the White House, Trump explained when the public would be able to access the declassified documents and the reason for his decision.
«I have come to the conclusion that public access to all documents held by the federal government relating to each of these assassinations is also in the public interest», - Trump said in his order.
According to Trump’s order, documents related to the Kennedy assassination will be published after the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General «present to the President a plan for the full and complete disclosure of documents related to the assassination of Kennedy» within 15 days of this order. This means that the plan for the publication of Kennedy documents must be presented to Trump by the first week of February 2025.
Trump’s order states that the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General will «review documents related to the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. and present to the President a plan for the full and complete disclosure of documents» within 45 days of the order. Therefore, the plan for the disclosure of these documents must be completed by or before the second week of March 2025.
In Trump’s order, he stated that he «has come to the conclusion that the continued redaction and withholding of information from documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy is not in the public interest, and the publication of these documents is long overdue».
«In the national interest, it is finally time to release all documents related to these assassinations without delay», - the White House said. «More than 50 years after the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the federal government has not provided the public with all of its documents related to these events. Their families and the American people deserve transparency and truth»
