At a rally in Ohio on October 12, U.S. President Donald Trump referred to WNBA player Sophie Cunningham as a «beautiful young woman» while discussing the topic of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Trump, who is 80 years old, made this statement while addressing former NFL coach Jon Gruden, who was present at the event in support of Senator John Husted.
Cunningham, 30, is known for her criticism of the participation of transgender women in the WNBA, although this is not currently a pressing issue. Her remarks have drawn negative reactions from other league players, coaches, and even her longtime friend West Wilson. Trump continued, stating that «many men want to come and look at her», - adding that in today’s political climate, speaking about a woman’s beauty can negatively impact a politician’s career.
Despite the president’s support, Cunningham emphasizes her political moderation, stating that she agrees and disagrees with opinions from both sides. She also noted that her views on transgender athletes do not stem from hatred but are based on a desire to protect the rights of biological women in sports.
This is not the first time the White House has mentioned Cunningham; following the release of an article in ESPN, former White House press secretary Caroline Levitt stated that Trump is keeping an eye on this issue and shares the belief that men should not participate in women’s sports competitions.
