President Donald Trump declared himself «King» on social media, claiming that he had stopped the controversial congestion pricing system in New York City due to rising costs.
However, the question of whether Trump and his administration will be successful in halting the congestion pricing program remains uncertain. Learn more about the payments and the likelihood of the president fulfilling his promise.
According to the NYC 311 website, a fee is charged for entering the Congestion Zone, which includes local streets and avenues in Manhattan south of and including 60th Street.
Trump’s message on social media elicited mixed reactions, with some celebrating his bold statement and others opposing it. Ultimately, the question remains as to how much power the «King» actually has to keep his promise.
Before his election, Trump promised to «end» the congestion pricing system and faced pressure from local members of Congress to do so. However, attempting to stop the program will likely result in a legal showdown, as the state of New York and the MTA plan to sue to prevent its halt.
At a press conference on Wednesday with MTA leadership, Governor Hochul responded to Trump’s «long live the king» comment posted on social media.
«I am here to say that New York has not been under the rule of a king for over 250 years, and we certainly are not going to start now. In the streets of the city, where battles were fought, we stood against the king and won. If you don’t know, New Yorkers, we are in the fight, we are not backing down — not now, not ever», - Hochul said.

New York City is the first in the United States to implement a congestion pricing system, although similar pricing programs have been in place for many years in cities such as London, Stockholm, Milan, and Singapore
