On Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed an order aimed at reducing the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, designed to help those struggling with infertility in building their families.

«Americans need reliable access to IVF and more affordable treatment options, as the cost of one cycle can range from $ 12,000 to $ 25,000», - the order stated. «Providing support, awareness, and access to affordable infertility treatment methods can help these families navigate the path to parenthood with hope and confidence».

While Americans generally support access to IVF, the issue has sparked disagreements among Republicans in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with some anti-abortion advocates opposing the use of unused embryos created during the procedure.

As of February 19, Trump had signed over 60 orders, more than any other president in the first 100 days in the last 40 years.

In 2016, Trump promised to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, a promise he fulfilled when the decision was overturned on June 24, 2022. Since then, the constitutional right to abortion, supported for almost half a century, has ceased to exist. He then advocated for states to determine their own abortion laws, without calling for a federal ban on the procedure.

«Many people have asked me about my stance on abortion and abortion rights», - Trump said in a video posted on his Truth Social website in April 2024. «My opinion now is that we have abortion, which everyone wanted from a legal standpoint, and states will determine by voting or legislation or possibly both. And whatever they decide should become the law of the land — in this case, the state law».

However, Trump is promoting language in the order that grants «personhood» — and with it constitutional rights — to embryos. This fuels anti-abortion groups in their fight to eliminate access to abortions, including pills and medical procedures, even if it leads to situations where people seeking to have children are denied life-saving reproductive medical assistance in cases of medical complications
