President Trump ended DEI programs and fired federal employees
After taking the oath, Donald Trump once again assumed the office of President of the United States on January 20, 2025. Upon returning to the White House, he signed several executive orders, one of which effectively terminates all DEI federal programs, and therefore their jobs. Find out more about the situation, including what these DEI programs are and whether these federal workers were fired.

The term «DEI» stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Typically, in workplaces, some employees are required or recommended to undergo diversity training programs in the workplace. Many job postings include a note of «equal employment opportunities», - confirming that the employer must prohibit discrimination against applicants and employees.

There are countless DEI programs and related jobs across the United States, including in the government. According to Trump’s executive order, which he signed in January 2025, he stated that the former Biden administration «forcefully implemented illegal and immoral discrimination programs called 'diversity, equity, and inclusion' (DEI) in virtually all aspects of the federal government, including areas from aviation security to the armed forces». He continued to claim that this «was a coordinated attempt, starting from the first day of Biden’s presidency when he signed Executive Order 13985, promoting racial justice and support for underserved communities through the federal government».

In his order, Trump specifically pointed to DEI programs in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The number of federal DEI workers and programs is currently unclear, as reported by several sources. In Trump’s order, he pointed to specific positions, including those with the title of «chief diversity officer».

The 47th president ordered to «to the fullest extent permitted by law, terminate all DEI, DEIA, and 'environmental justice' offices and positions (including, but not limited to, chief diversity officer positions) in the government, meaning that any employee associated with these labels will lose their job».

The White House announced that all federal DEI workers will be placed on paid leave on January 22, 2025. By January 31, federal agencies must develop a «written plan» for the dismissal of DEI workers, according to the BBC.

According to several sources, including the BBC, Trump’s DEI order contradicts Executive Order No. 11236 by former President Lyndon Johnson in 1965, which prohibited federal contractors from discriminating against workers based on race, color, region, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, and other factors
