In honor of the prince’s 11th birthday, Kate Middleton shared a portrait of her eldest son on July 22, continuing her tradition. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 42 years old, have released portraits of Prince George every year on his birthday since he was a baby, and this practice has extended to his two younger brothers and sister, 9-year-old Princess Charlotte and 6-year-old Prince Louis.
The young prince, who is second in line to the throne, is depicted smiling and relaxed, although dressed in a suit and shirt, complemented by a friendship bracelet.
The caption read: «Wishing Prince George a very happy 11th birthday today!»
The image was taken by the princess earlier this month in Windsor, where the family lives at Adelaide Cottage.
The latest photo follows the release of a family portrait of George, his brothers, and father last month to mark the Duke of Cambridge’s 42nd birthday. Meanwhile, earlier this month Kensington Palace released an image of George’s siblings, taken from behind in England shirts after the Euro final against Spain.
However, it was noted that the prince’s birthday was expected to be spent more «quietly» due to his mother’s cancer treatment.
«It gave her support. She’s been through something awful and stressful, and it’s important to have little victories to look forward to or that give strength and energy to move forward», - a palace source told PEOPLE. «And this was one of those».
Now that her children have finished school, royal sources told Vanity Fair that Middleton and Prince William plan to remain «under the radar» at their home in Norfolk while she continues with preventative chemotherapy.
«She won’t have to be in the spotlight», - a palace source said. «Being with family and just being herself will give her energy. There will be plenty of time to focus on her recovery»
