Prince Frederick was the son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julia of Nassau.
Frederick was only 22 years old when he passed away in March 2025.
Prince Frederick passed away from a mitochondrial disorder called PolG disease. In a statement, Prince Robert of Luxembourg described the final moments of his late son.
«By bidding each of us farewell — some kind, some wise, some mentoring — in true Frederick style, he left us all together with one final long-standing family joke», - wrote Prince Robert. «Even in his final moments, his humor and boundless compassion compelled him to leave us with one last laugh… to lift us all up. Frederick’s last question to me, before his other remarks, was: 'Dad, are you proud of me?' He could barely speak for a few days, so the clarity of those words was as astonishing as the weight of the moment was deep. The answer was very simple, and he had heard it so many times, but this time he needed reassurance that he had given everything he could in his short and beautiful existence and now, finally, could move on».
According to the POLG Foundation website, the disease Prince Frederick lived with «depletes the body’s cells of energy, causing progressive multiple organ dysfunction and failure». There are no «effective» treatment methods, the foundation notes, and there is no cure for patients living with this extremely rare condition
