Prince William was devastated after learning about his wife Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis, a royal author said.

«It was devastating for him», - royal author Robert Jobson told Us Weekly.

The royal commentator added that the news of the princess’s cancer, announced in a public statement in March 2024, «knocked him for six».

«There's no doubt about it», - Jobson added, noting that William, 42, likely felt an immediate «lump in his throat» or «hollow feeling in his stomach».

The Princess of Wales, 42, underwent a significant abdominal surgery earlier this year, and cancer was discovered after medical tests following the operation.

Unlike her husband, who was «completely shattered», - Princess Kate, according to Jobson, was more «calm» and focused on her health priorities.

«She's someone who wants to find solutions and rise above the noise and drama, and I think given what she’s been through, you don’t want to waste time on noise, on drama, when you have something to do with your health».

With two prominent royal figures out of action, William has a lot of work on his plate. Apparently, both King Charles III, who shared his own cancer diagnosis in February, and Kate have told him, «Now we need you to step up».

«[Kate] is coping well with this happening», - Jobson said. «She's shown him that she’s here for him, just as he’s here for her».

While much of Princess Kate’s cancer diagnosis remains a mystery, Jobson claimed that the royal figure is focused on life, especially as a mother of three young children.

«You live day by day; you do what you want to do», - he explained. «Her children are very young. This is time she won’t get back».

Kate has mostly stayed out of the public eye as her health battle continues, making only two major appearances this year: one at the Trooping the Colour in June and at Wimbledon in July, where she received a standing ovation.

Discussing Kate’s decision to make a rare public appearance at Wimbledon, a royal source told PEOPLE: «It gave her support». They continued: «She's been through something awful and stressful, and it’s important to have small victories to hope for or that give you the courage and energy to move forward»
