Remember how Queen Elizabeth II gifted Frogmore Cottage to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and that gift came with an annual rent and quite a hefty fee? Remember that the Sussexes continued to pay their rent for Frogmore until 2023, when King Charles evicted them? Remember how Prince William and Kate were furious when Harry and Meghan moved to Windsor, and a few years later, they themselves demanded to be given a house in Windsor? Remember how William and Kate blew up a whole story about how they too would be paying a high rent for their million-pound home, Anmer Hall, just to seize a hundred acres of public park? Good times. Well, not quite. More like «absurd times». To make the situation even more ridiculous, Prince William seems to be in a constant state of hysteria over the very idea that Prince Harry might show up in Windsor or stay anywhere in the area. It’s essentially «Windsor is MINE, Harold!»
According to reports, Prince William made sure that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were not offered accommodation in Windsor during their recent visit to the UK to avoid a potentially explosive meeting between the estranged brothers. While King Charles is reportedly taking steps to mend relations with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, new claims suggest that the Prince of Wales was determined to keep his younger brother away from the family home.
According to Emily Andrews, editor of the royal chronicle for Woman magazine, William was «unhappy» when plans for Harry and Meghan to visit Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet became known, which fueled rumors that they might stay at one of the royal residences in Windsor. Andrews claimed that William made his feelings clear behind the scenes.
«I've been told that [Prince William] made it clear that Harry and Meghan should not be offered accommodation at Windsor Castle or any other royal residence in Windsor», - she wrote. «He didn’t want to risk seeing his younger brother—or Meghan—on his territory».
The Prince and Princess of Wales previously lived in Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, just minutes away from Windsor Castle and the former home of Harry and Meghan, Frogmore Cottage, which increased the likelihood of their encounter. The Waleses currently live several miles away, at Anmer Hall. Andrews suggested that William was keen to avoid any face-to-face confrontation, asserting that a «brutal showdown» between the brothers was something he wanted to avoid «at all costs».
«I would say he would ignore Harry if he got too close», - she added.
When Harry visited the UK in 2023, he reportedly requested a room at Windsor Castle, but his father denied him. This year, we heard that Harry hinted at a desire to be invited to Sandringham to see his father, but that too was apparently declined. Is William trying to take credit for King Charles’s silly games? Probably. I doubt Charles wants Harry to remain in royal property, and given the recent canceled offer to stay at Buckingham Palace, the responsibility lies not with William, but with Charles. Now, I’m sure William has thrown quite a few tantrums too, don’t get me wrong. But the very idea that William is pulling strings to keep Harry away from Windsor (where Harry literally rented a house before William copied him) seems ridiculous and strange. And if Harry does show up in Windsor, then what? William is too cowardly to actually confront his brother at this point
