Her Highness Sheikha Mahra Mohammed Rashid Al Maktoum, the princess of Dubai, has written a powerful public statement against her ex-husband, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The 30-year-old princess took to Instagram last week to announce their divorce because he allegedly has «other companions».
«Dear husband, since you are busy with other companions, I now officially announce our divorce», - the princess wrote in her Instagram post. «I divorce you, I divorce you, I divorce you».
Sheikha Mahra concluded her statement by writing, «Take care of yourself. Your ex-wife».
According to many sources, a woman openly declaring «I divorce you» three times is unusual and known as «triple talaq» in Islamic practices. This statement does not align with traditional Islamic customs. According to tradition, only the husband can initiate divorce through talaq. The wife, on the other hand, must seek judicial divorce or «khula», in which she asks the court to dissolve her marriage. In return, she must compensate her ex-husband by returning her dowry.
However, in recent years, some countries have changed the practice of triple talaq due to the potential for abuse and impact on women’s rights.
Sheikha Mahra is the daughter of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The princess married Sheikh Maktoum in April 2023. A month later, the couple held a grand wedding ceremony at the Dubai World Trade Centre after their wedding. Sheikh Maktoum is an entrepreneur who has been involved in several business projects, including GCI Real Estate Development Company and MM Group of Companies.
Sheikh Maktoum has not yet responded to the princess’s statement, but both have apparently unfollowed each other on their social media accounts.
In May, the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, which Sheikha Mahra confirmed on Instagram. She shared a photo of the baby’s hands. A month later, the princess posted a separate photo of herself and her daughter with the caption «Just the two of us»
