Today is Groundhog Day, and it wouldn’t be the same celebration without Punxsutawney Phil. The iconic globally renowned weather prognosticator made his prediction for the winter season of 2025 at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, February 2nd, and many gathered to find out what Phil predicted. So, will we have six more weeks of winter this year, or will we see warm weather with an early spring? Find out if Phil saw his shadow below.

Phil has been an iconic weather predictor since 1887. He is also known by the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club as the «Seer of Seers», - «Prognosticator of Prognosticators», - «Weather Prophet Extraordinary», - «Br'er Groundhog», - and «National Treasure». Legend has it that there is only one Punxsutawney Phil — much like how we observe there is only one Easter Bunny, one Santa Claus, one Tooth Fairy, and other mythical holiday figures.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Phil’s weather predictions have been accurate 35 percent of the time over the past few years. In 2024, Phil did not see his shadow and therefore predicted an early spring.

Groundhog Day is an annual tradition celebrated in the United States and Canada on February 2nd. Pennsylvania has been the site of the celebration for many years, especially after the premiere of the famous Bill Murray movie «Groundhog Day» in 1993, where Punxsutawney was chosen as the setting. In fact, the character Bill plays in the movie is named Phil. The character hates his job as a television weatherman, and he finds himself in a time loop, waking up on Groundhog Day every morning. The only way Phil breaks the cycle is when he falls in love with the character played by Andie MacDowell, Rita.

Yes, Phil saw his shadow. So, winter should last another six weeks this year.

It was a special celebration for Phil this year because the groundhog became the father of twins, whom the public helped name Shadow and Sunny.

Groundhog Day always falls on February 2nd because it is the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. The tradition dates back to a Christian holiday known as the Feast of the Presentation, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The tradition of an animal predicting the weather began in Germany and eventually became a global tradition.

The club also noted that Groundhog Day was officially mentioned in the newspaper in 1886
