The disappearance of a University of Pittsburgh student has caused national concern among students during spring break. Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old girl, disappeared in early March 2025 while on vacation in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Now, as her family has made a statement, authorities are searching for Konanki in the air, on land, and at sea.
According to CNN, Konanki was last seen on surveillance video around 4:15 am local time on March 6. She was seen with seven other people entering the beach at the Riu Republica hotel. Her disappearance was reported to the Dominican National Police the next day, March 7, following a call from the US Embassy in Santo Domingo.
Konanki is a medical school student who arrived in Punta Cana with her friends on March 3. Her father, Subbarayudu Konanki, made a public statement about his daughter, as reported by CNN.
«My daughter is a very good girl», - he said. «She is ambitious. She wanted to dedicate herself to a career in medicine».
The Konanki family is originally from India and has been living in the US since 2006. They are permanent residents and live in Virginia.
According to her father, Konanki «went to the beach early in the morning on March 6 around 4 am with friends and some guys they met at the resort. After that, her friends returned after some time, but my daughter did not return, did not show up at the beach».
«So far, authorities, many authorities here in the Dominican Republic, have been searching in the waters», - he added, according to CNN. «They have been searching with helicopters and other tools. They have also searched in nearby coves, bushes, trees. They have gone through the same areas several times».
A local police source told the publication that surveillance footage captured five women and one man leaving the beach at the Riu Republica hotel at 5:55 am, and it was assumed that Konanki stayed on the beach with another young man. At 9:55 am, the young man was seen leaving the beach in subsequent surveillance footage, but Konanki was not seen.
