Puerto Ricans condemn Trump for joking about a «floating island of garbage»

Puerto Ricans, including Grammy award winners Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin, widely condemn Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after his final pre-election rally in New York at Madison Square Garden.
However, it was not the former president who made controversial remarks about Puerto Rico at the rally; that role was played by a comedian named Kill Tony. Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe faced immediate criticism not only for a series of jokes based on racist stereotypes, but also for his most notable comment calling the Caribbean island a «floating garbage island».
Here’s how Trump and his team responded to the criticism, as well as more about his relationship with the U.S. territory.
Hinchcliffe managed to anger not only the opposition party, but also some Republican politicians, prompting Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar to clarify that the joke does not reflect the «values of the Republican Party». In the midst of the ongoing scandal in the tight race, considering that the Republican candidate was trying to win over Latino voters, the campaign quickly distanced itself from the joke.
Senior advisor Daniel Alvarez stated: «This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign».
Trump has had a complicated relationship with Puerto Rico, as highlighted in a recent social media post by Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny. He shared several clips of Harris discussing Trump’s inaction after Hurricane Maria in 2017: «I will never forget what Donald Trump did and did not do when Puerto Rico needed a caring and competent leader».
«He abandoned the island, tried to block aid after two devastating hurricanes in a row, and only offered paper towels and insults».
Thousands of people in Puerto Rico lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Maria, which followed Hurricane Irma, causing widespread power outages across the island. Support for Trump was largely seen as a PR stunt, in which he threw paper towels into the crowd of hurricane survivors, but he still sought praise for his handling of Hurricane Maria, calling it an «incredible, underrated success» in 2019.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. As a result, residents cannot vote in U.S. presidential elections due to provisions set forth in the Electoral College. However, Puerto Ricans can vote for president if they are registered in any of the U.S. states by mail-in voting or by traveling to their state to vote.
Although voters in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories (such as the Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa) cannot participate in the November elections, both the Democratic and Republican parties allow them to choose delegates to represent them at the nominating conventions
