R. Kelly (real name: Robert Sylvester Kelly) is serving time in prison for his crimes related to racketeering and sexual violence, but recently there have been reports of a suspected drug overdose behind bars at the hands of prison staff. As a result, the disgraced former hip-hop artist was reportedly rushed to the hospital. Below, we will break down everything we know at the moment about Kelly’s hospitalization.
Kelly is behind bars at FCI Butner Medium I in North Carolina. He is serving a 31-year sentence after being convicted on nine counts of a «revised indictment accusing him of racketeering based on criminal activity, including child sexual exploitation, forced labor, and Mann Act violations involving the coercion and transportation of women and girls across state lines for illegal sexual activity», - according to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York and the National Security Service.
AllHipHop reported on June 16, 2025, that attorney Bo B. Brindley claimed Kelly overdosed in solitary confinement after allegedly being given an extra dose of medication by prison staff.
«This means that within two days of his dose being administered, Bureau of Prisons staff administered an amount of medication that significantly exceeded a safe dose and caused Mr. Kelly to overdose, putting his life in danger», - Brindley said, according to the publication. «They gave him an amount of medication that could have killed him».
According to AllHipHop, Kelly was hospitalized after allegedly being drugged by prison staff. In emergency motion court documents obtained by the publication, the former R&B singer was placed in isolation on June 10, 2025, and was given an extra dose of medication by staff on June 12. The next morning, reportedly, Kelly experienced dizziness and loss of vision before being taken to Duke Hospital.
It is unclear what the alleged drug was.
Doctors monitored Kelly for two days after discovering he had been given a «life-threatening dose» of medication, the publication reported. Additionally, they found clots in both Kelly’s lungs and legs, according to AllHipHop. After medical staff recommended surgery for Kelly, reportedly, prison staff allegedly removed Kelly from the hospital.
«Within an hour, officers with weapons entered his room and took Mr. Kelly away», - Brindley claimed, according to AllHipHop. «He was taken from the hospital against his will and against the doctors' orders. He was denied the surgery he needed to clear the clots in his lungs, which were life-threatening. This happened. It will be confirmed by medical records. It is indisputable».
Kelly’s lawyers claim he has been subjected to unfair treatment in solitary confinement. Describing the conditions as «inhumane», - Brindley claimed Kelly has not eaten for days out of fear of being poisoned, cannot eat food from the commissary, sleeps with spiders on him, and does not have access to phone calls, according to AllHipHop.
Kelly’s attorneys are also demanding his temporary release to home confinement. Meanwhile, prosecutors have called the move and allegations against prison staff «disgusting», - according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
