The murder of Natalie Holloway was finally solved years after her case made headlines. More than 15 years after the disappearance of the 18-year-old girl from a bar in Aruba, Joran van der Sloot confessed to her murder as part of a plea deal on charges of extortion and fraud using communication means on October 18, 2023.

In February 2024, Peacock released a documentary film «Pathological: Joran van der Sloot’s Lie» about the tragic murder. Here’s everything you need to know about Natalie’s death in light of the new film.

Natalie was one of over 100 students from Mountain Brook High School who participated in an unofficial graduation trip to Aruba. She was last seen leaving a nightclub on May 30. Joran, then 17, was one of three other men seen getting into a car with her. When she did not show up for her flight the next day, an investigation began, and Joran was one of the suspects. Joran was arrested in June on suspicion, but no charges were filed against him.

Nearly six years after her disappearance, Natalie’s father, Dave, filed a petition for her official declaration of death in Alabama. Her mother, Beth, contested this, but a judge signed the petition in January 2012.

Joran, now 36, was found guilty of the murder of Stephany Tatiana Flores Ramirez in 2010. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison in Peru in 2012. Before fleeing to Peru, Joran offered Natalie’s family information on where her body was in exchange for $ 15,000. The family sent him the money, but the information he provided turned out to be false. He was tried in the US on charges of extortion and fraud using communication means. As part of the plea deal, he was required to confess to Natalie’s murder. «For 19 years you denied that you killed Natalie Holloway. Your lies caused unbearable pain», - said Natalie’s mother in a victim impact statement, according to CNN. «I hope that maybe, finally, some small part of justice will be achieved, although no act of justice will heal our pain».

As part of the plea deal, Joran had to confess to what happened to Natalie that night when she was killed. Beth Holloway’s lawyer shared in a statement to People what happened to her daughter. He said that Natalie refused the sexual advances made by Joran. He said they lay down and kissed. «She tells me 'no.' She tells me she doesn’t want me to… to touch her. I insist. I continue to touch her anyway», - he said in a recorded confession, according to People.

He said that after he continued to touch her, she kicked him hard in the groin. Then he hit her in the face. He said that after he hit her, she was unconscious and possibly dead, and then he hit her with a brick. «I smash her head with it completely. Yes, her face, essentially, contorts», - he said. Then he said he threw her body into the ocean.

After his sentencing, he will be extradited back to Peru to continue serving his sentence. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the US on extortion charges.

The most recent Peacock documentary film, «Pathological: Joran van der Sloot’s Lie», - is set to be released on February 27, 2024. The documentary explores Natalie’s tragic death, and her brother, Matthew Holloway, also shared heartbreaking new details in the trailer. «I remember my dad jumping into the dump and literally tearing open trash bags», - he said in the clip. «Moving large appliances, lifting things with his bare hands, and just searching for Natalie’s body. Dad was 100% in it, and seeing that was really powerful».

In the same trailer for the documentary film, Natalie’s father, Dave, recalled the sad events when he suspected his daughter had died. «I had a feeling that, just as a parent, you have this feeling that she’s no longer there», - he said. «But on the other hand, I had to convince everyone else that I had the wrong feelings. That maybe we were all mistaken»
