At least five Secret Service agents, according to reports, were sent on leave during the investigation of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Several sources reported on Friday, August 23, that several members and the chief of the Pittsburgh office, as well as one person from Trump’s team, were sent on leave over a month after the shooting.

On July 13, Matthew Thomas Krux fired several shots at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The candidate’s ear from the Republican Party was grazed by a bullet. After Trump was hit, security personnel immediately intervened and took him to the nearest car.

Other participants were shot, including firefighter Cory Komperatore, who died. Two more were injured but survived.

78-year-old Trump thanked the Secret Service in a public statement after the incident.

«I want to thank the United States Secret Service and the entire law enforcement system for their quick response to the shooting that just occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania», - Trump wrote via Truth Social. «First and foremost, I want to express my condolences to the family of the man at the rally who was killed, as well as the family of another person who was seriously injured».

Two days after the shooting, former Secret Service director Kimberly Chitl issued a statement on the incident. State officials questioned how this could have happened if Secret Service agents were on site.

«Secret Service personnel on site quickly responded during the incident, our counter-snipers neutralized the shooter, and our agents took measures to ensure the security of former President Donald Trump», - part of Chitl’s statement read.

After a hearing before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Chitl resigned on July 23. She was replaced by Ronald L. Row, Jr.

A month after several Secret Service agents were sent on leave, spokesman Antonio Guglielmi insisted that «the security mission investigation continues, and we are examining the processes, procedures, and factors that led to this operational failure», - according to CBS News.

He added that the Secret Service «holds itself to the highest professional standards, and any policy violations identified and confirmed will be investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility for possible disciplinary action»
