Ryan Garcia became a well-known boxer as a teenager. After his professional debut in 2016, he won the interim World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title in 2021. However, by 2024, Ryan’s career took a sharp turn after he seemingly announced his retirement and was subsequently excluded from the WBC.

Learn more about Ryan and his career below.

In 2016, Ryan was only 17 years old when he made his professional debut. He defeated Edgar Meza by technical knockout and signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions.

Born in Victorville, California, Ryan grew up in a large family that closely supported his boxing career. His father was one of Ryan’s coaches, and his mother was his personal administrative assistant. In 2019, Ryan welcomed a daughter named Riley with his ex-girlfriend Catherine Gomez, and in 2020, a daughter named Belu with his ex-wife Andrea Selina. Ryan and Andrea also raise a son named Henry.

Throughout his career, Ryan has won 24 out of 26 fights, with 20 of them being won by technical knockout.

In 2022, it was revealed that Ryan had started practicing jiu-jitsu in addition to professional boxing.

In July 2024, Ryan was excluded from the WBC due to several racist and derogatory remarks on social media. According to many sources, he expressed views against several groups of people based on their race, sexual orientation, and religion.

«Using my powers as WBC president, I declare Ryan Garcia’s exclusion from any activity with our organization», - wrote Mauricio Sulaiman on Twitter. «We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s well-being, as he has refused several attempts of our help in mental health and substance abuse».

According to the Associated Press, Ryan posted and quickly deleted an apologetic tweet saying, «I was trolling, I want all killings to stop. I love everyone, sorry if I offended you».

Ryan’s family also released a statement, noting his «struggle with mental health for many years».

«Our family categorically does not support any of [Ryan's] statements about race or religion — they do not reflect who Ryan really is and how he was raised», - their statement said. «Those who know Ryan can confirm this. Ryan has openly talked about his ongoing struggle with mental health for many years, and as a family, we are committed to ensuring and encouraging him to get the necessary help to overcome this very difficult period and ensure both his immediate and long-term well-being»
