Ryan Gosling has always been one of the most famous heartthrobs in Hollywood. From «The Notebook» to «Barbie», the 43-year-old actor has become more selective in choosing his film roles. During a photoshoot for WSJ. Magazine on Thursday, May 2, Ryan noted that he does not «really take on roles that will put me in a dark place».
«This moment is about trying to read the room at home and figure out what’s best for all of us», - he explained, before giving credit to his partner, Eva Mendes, and their daughters, Esmeralda and Amada. «The decisions I make, I make with Eva, and we make them with our family in mind first and foremost».
Ryan and Eva, 50, first met in 2011 on the set of their film «Beyond the Pines». They have been together since, playing love interests on screen. Ryan’s latest film, «The Stuntman», provided him with a similar experience to «Beyond the Pines» in terms of his characters — both films showed the Canadian actor in the role of a stuntman of some sort.
After having children with Eva, Ryan made career decisions based on what would be best for them, noting in his interview that «La La Land» was the «first» of many.
«It was just like, 'Oh, this will be fun and good for them, because even though they don’t come to set, we’re doing piano or dance or singing every day,'» explained the proud father of two. «Their interest in Barbie and their lack of interest in Ken was inspiring. I thought, they were already making little movies about their Barbies on the iPad when this happened, so the fact that I was going to work to do the same thing, we just felt like we were on the same wavelength».
While his family is his top priority, Ryan also revealed that he wants to be involved in more «inclusive» productions, rather than just taking on projects to «pay the bills».
«I want to do things that are inclusive and not for an audience of one», - he emphasized. «I think for so long I was just trying to pay the bills and work. It’s only recently that I realized I have the opportunity to actually make movies that make me love cinema».
