Although Ken is considered the second fiddle compared to Barbie, blockbuster director Greta Gerwig hinted that he may soon get his own movie.
The 41-year-old filmmaker garnered significant attention with her 2023 film, which featured some of Hollywood’s favorite actors, including Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and others, alongside Margot Robbie. The film celebrated female power and sisterhood, leaving Ken, played by 43-year-old Gosling, constantly in Barbie’s shadow, trying to prove his masculinity among his fellow Kens.
The film, which made many cry, laugh, and smile, was so well-received that a possible sequel focusing on Ken was hinted at. In an interview with Sharon Alfonse for the 60 Minutes program, Greta Gerwig was asked if she was considering creating a sequel centered on Ryan’s character. Laughing, she replied, «I mean, the truth is, you know, we’ll see».
She noted that there was plenty of material while writing the script for a second Ken film. «We wrote, wrote, and wrote», - she said. «I mean, it sounds so silly to say out loud, but I love Ken. We love Ken. We take Ken seriously too».
Greta explained that the film’s concept began with the idea of an ideal world, like clockwork, running smoothly until the thought of death entered Barbie’s mind. As Margot Robbie’s character was conceived as the perfect doll, Greta felt the importance of including real themes in a story about such a character. «The film should be warm-hearted, even though it mocks everything», - she said during the interview.
«You know, Barbie has been around since 1959, and everyone knows who she is, and everyone has an opinion, and she has gone through everything from forward to backward in time. She’s a hero, she’s a villain».
While a second film has not been confirmed, the first made a significant impact, especially popularizing the color pink and earning billions at the box office
