Former New York teacher Ryan McCaffrey pleaded guilty to posing as a teenager on Snapchat to solicit nude photographs from underage girls and share child sexual abuse materials. He pleaded guilty on September 21 to two counts of disseminating indecent materials to minors and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
The 38-year-old McCaffrey previously taught social studies at Riverhead High School on Long Island and was a coach for a youth soccer team. He resigned in February 2025, shortly before his arrest in May 2025. District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney stated that as a teacher, McCaffrey had a duty to protect children, not exploit them.
The investigation began after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported to the New York State Police in November 2024 about an individual sharing child sexual abuse materials on the messaging app Kik. In January 2025, police executed a search warrant at McCaffrey’s home in Ridge and seized his electronic devices. During the investigation, it was discovered that he was posing as a teenager on Snapchat and communicating with several underage girls under the username «c_chambers77».
Prosecutors allege that McCaffrey sent photographs of his genitals to minors and solicited nude images from them. He also attempted to view and acquire additional sexual abuse materials and shared at least one such video with another user on Kik. McCaffrey had previously been convicted of similar offenses in Bergen County, New Jersey.
Following his resignation, interim Riverhead School Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich informed parents that the criminal charges against McCaffrey did not involve students from the school district. McCaffrey is expected to receive a three-year prison sentence followed by five years of supervision. His sentencing is scheduled for October 21.
