Olympic swimmer Ryan Murphy won a bronze medal in the men’s 100-meter backstroke on Monday, July 29, but that wasn’t the real prize. After the award ceremony, the 29-year-old athlete saw his wife, Bridget Condon, holding a large sign that read: «It's a girl!» Ryan told reporters after that moment and enthusiastically talked about the «exciting» time in his and Bridget’s life.

«When I was coming back, Bridget was holding a sign that said, 'Ryan, it’s a girl!' It was a gender reveal for me from Bridget», - he explained, according to Reuters. «It was the first time I heard it. Of course, I knew she was pregnant, but it was the first time I heard the gender».

The US team member also admitted that he and his wife «honestly, both thought it would be a boy, and everyone we talked to also thought it would be a boy», - but the future parents are thrilled about their future daughter.

«So it’s really, really exciting that we’re going to have a child, and it’s going to be a girl», - he said. «And I think we’re just a couple of weeks behind (Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback) Trevor Lawrence, so that’s pretty cool».

Ryan and Bridget first met in 2016 and got engaged in 2022. The following year, the couple got married. Earlier, Ryan competed in the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Rio in 2021 and 2016, respectively. Throughout his swimming career, Bridget has been a source of «great balance» for him, as Ryan told Olympics.com in June.

«She's the one who can say, 'Hey, Ryan, you’re a little too hard on yourself today, can you be a little softer on yourself,'» the Olympian explained. «She fits me perfectly and helps me keep my cool».

As a competitive athlete, pressure can sometimes become overwhelming, Ryan noted during his interview. However, thanks to his support system, he has learned to turn his «perfectionism» into a healthier attitude.

«When you have to analyze swimming things at such a detailed level and really be a perfectionist, it’s easy to translate that perfectionism onto yourself», - he explained, adding, «And start analyzing your own personality traits and so on»
