Ryan Reynolds candidly spoke about his late father, who struggled with Parkinson’s disease, and their complex relationship.

The «Deadpool» and «Wolverine» actor lost his father, James Reynolds, in 2015 after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s. In an essay for PEOPLE magazine published on Wednesday, August 14, the 47-year-old actor recalled his connection with his father as the family dealt with the terrible disease, which they seemed to rarely talk about.

«He said the word 'Parkinson's' maybe three times, as far as I know, and once was not to me», - Reynolds shared. «There was a lot of denial, a lot of secrecy».

As the youngest of four brothers, Ryan navigated his relationship with his father, who was diagnosed in 1995, under the strain of a disease that only exacerbated existing issues. Describing James as a «man who doesn’t share his feelings», - Reynolds recalled the difficulties they faced.

«He was a boxer, a cop, a tough guy. I can’t even really remember a real conversation with my father», - Reynolds said of his father, who passed away at the age of 74. «He was a present father — never missed a football game — but he just wasn’t capable of feeling, or at least sharing, the full spectrum of human emotion».

The situation became even more complicated as lesser-known symptoms of Parkinson’s began to manifest, such as hallucinations and delusions. Reynolds described his feelings at the time, recalling how he thought his father was «losing his mind».

«My father really went down the rabbit hole, where he had a hard time distinguishing reality from fiction. And as a result, everyone else in his life lost faith and trust in his point of view», - Reynolds explained. «He wove conspiracies about 'this happening' and 'these people might be after me' or 'this person wants to kill me.' And just things that were such a wild departure from the person I grew up with and knew».

Nine years after his father’s death, Reynolds said that he constantly pieces together the story and reflects on how he didn’t «really take my own responsibility» when making mistakes in their relationship.

«It was very easy for me to feed into the idea that my father and I didn’t see eye-to-eye on anything and that real relationships with him were impossible», - Reynolds admitted. «Now, as I get older, I look at that and think that it was my inability at the time to meet him where he was».

«I could have been there for him in the end, and I wasn’t. He and I just drifted apart, and that’s something I’ll live with forever».

Now, as a father of four children — James, 9, Inez, 7, Betty, 4, and Ollie, 1, with wife Blake Lively, Reynolds said that his perspective has changed. Although his parenting style differs from his father’s, he now better understands the complex dynamics between parents and children.

«Healing for me really comes through my relationships with my own children, while taking some things from my father that are incredibly valuable», - he said. «My father had incredible honesty. He didn’t lie. [Now] I can fill in those little gaps that maybe caused me pain. I can be here»
