«Wordle» started as a prototype in 2013 and evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. Josh said he was «trying to make something that was authentic to [him]» and that he wanted to «create something for someone [he] loved. It just so happened that many others loved it too».

As for why he decided to sell his invention to The New York Times, Josh noted: «For me, the decision to sell the game was very clear. It was obvious because of the success of 'Wordle' that I could change my life if I wanted to. But there are many things I wouldn’t like about running a game business. And it was so clear to me that I didn’t want anything to do with it».

Josh also advised other innovators: «Don't try to make 'Wordle.' Do what excites you and what matters to you. Everything else will follow from that».
