Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election has sparked numerous reactions, especially among leading late-night TV shows, leading to significant debates. During his victory speech in the early hours of November 6, 2024, the 78-year-old Republican declared: «We must put our country first for at least some time. We must fix it. Because together we can truly make America great again for all Americans. So I just want to say what a great honor this is. I want to thank you. I will not let you down. America’s future will be bigger, better, bolder, richer, safer, and stronger than ever before. God bless you and God bless America».
While Trump celebrated his victory, others expressed disappointment. Here’s what some TV hosts said about the Republican victory:
Stephen Colbert addressed the election results live on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, saying: «Today people told me, 'Sorry, you have to do a show today,' which is nice to have in mind, but I don’t necessarily have to do a show today. I can do a show today». He noted that many prefer not to be alone during this time because of the elections.
Jimmy Kimmel remarked on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live!: «Donald Trump is like the Emperor from Star Wars». He added: «He's old, he’s evil, and he keeps coming back without a reasonable explanation». The 56-year-old host expressed emotional disappointment with the results for women, children, hardworking immigrants, healthcare, climate, science, journalism, justice, and freedom of speech.
Jimmy Fallon joked about the elections on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying: «Well, guys, last night America decided to go back to its crazy ex and elect Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States». He humorously added that Thanksgiving this year will be «awkward».
Seth Meyers admitted on Late Night with Seth Meyers: «I voted for Kamala Harris», - and compared election night to waiting for Santa on Christmas. He continued: «But, you know, and this is true, and this is something I accept, half the country thinks he’s a good guy, or they don’t care that he’s not, because they think he’s a good president, and because of that he will be president again. That’s how democracy works in America, a country where the privilege to live, even on a morning like today, is also such a privilege».
On After Midnight, Taylor Tomlinson joked: «I'm Taylor Tomlinson, welcome to the show. First of all, the elephant in the room, sorry if it’s your birthday today. That sucks. Many today are feeling shock and depression and can’t believe they have to go to work. Me too. That’s what’s happening here. But I will say, it’s an honor to be on TV while women are still allowed to be»
