Regina Sofia: a Broadway star with an impressive resume

Broadway is drawing more attention to the dancer whose resume has already begun to stand out.
Regina Sofia’s current performance in the musical «Chess» at the Imperial Theatre has brought her to Broadway at an important moment, but what makes this role significant is everything that surrounds it. This is not just a case of fortunate casting based on hype. It is the latest chapter in her creative career, which already includes leading roles in major theaters, high praise for her achievements in dance, competitive awards, and a variety of styles spanning multiple genres.
Her presence in «Chess» carries weight because she comes with a well-developed resume.
This role resulted from a lengthy audition process that lasted several months and involved a large number of dancers, from which only a small number were ultimately selected. Regina Sofia earned one of those spots. She is also one of two casting participants making their Broadway debut, which adds significance to this moment. The production has already received an award for «Outstanding Dance Ensemble», - and Regina Sofia has become part of the work that helped achieve this recognition.
«I take this trust seriously», - she says. «When you’re invited to a production of this level, you want to approach it with all your strength».
This sense of responsibility permeates the rest of her resume. Long before «Chess», - Regina Sofia was already performing challenging roles in respected theaters. She played Kaylar in «Bring It On!» at The Muny and Portia in «Something's Afoot!» at Music Theatre Wichita—two leading roles that immediately show she is not building her career on a single image, rhythm, or type of stage.
«I enjoy stepping into spaces that require different strengths», - she says. «It keeps me honest and helps me grow».
She has utilized a wide range of skills as a lead dancer in roles such as Patsy in «Crazy for You», - as well as in ensemble roles in various productions.
This may be the clearest way to understand why her current moment feels so strong. Regina Sofia does not present herself to the public with just one impressive line on her resume. She comes with evidence from different directions.
From 2023 to 2025, she received five individual scholarships and awards related to dance and performance achievements: the June H. Ford Memorial Award for Dance Performance in a Musical, the Ruben and Gladys Golumbick Scholarship for Performance Achievement, the Fineor Family Award for Arts in Musical Theatre, the Robert E. Leonard Award, and the Sue Carson Award.
«I take pride in these awards because they reflect years of effort», - she says. «They remind me that there is substance behind the work».
Her dance experience helps explain why this substance is so clearly manifested. Regina Sofia’s experience encompasses hip-hop, jazz, musical theater dance, ballet, and contemporary dance. This diversity is not just a list of styles; it is part of her identity as a dancer. She has intentionally built breadth rather than limiting herself to one style of movement.
«I have always wanted to be versatile in the truest sense», - she says. «I want to bring a full skill set into the room».
This instinct began to develop early. She started studying hip-hop and ballet at the age of five and then continued to expand her training as her abilities grew. Later, she led the 13th dance troupe METTA as the dance captain, winning silver at the National Dance Championships in the Philippines. She also placed second at the same championships, received an honorable mention at the Philippine Dance Cup, and performed as an opening act for Ballet Philippines during their production of «Romeo and Juliet».
These achievements are important on paper, but they also point to something deeper. Regina Sofia has been entrusted not only with dancing but also with maintaining a higher standard. She has spoken about taking on responsibility…
